Technical codes of Drum and Bass Music Videos - Anna Hester

Technical Codes of Drum and Bass

Rudimental - Feel The Love ft. John Newman

For this task I will be analysing all the technical codes found within the drum and bass genre for music videos; this includes cinematography and editing. To see the common trends and aspects that apply to the video I will be using Rudimentals - Feel The Love ft. John Newman as my example.

Cinematography

Throughout drum and bass videos there are a constant use of a hand held cameras, helping to track the movement. This creates a messy effect, making the footage seem less professional as there is no control in what is being filmed. This also reflected in the type of music, the drum and bass is very much out of control.

Another common theme throughout drum and bass videos is that there are all types of frame sizes. Most significantley there are close ups. These are used to show detail or to signify something important.

Drum and Bass videos also tend to show vast environments or run down industrial places, to show the impact of them they tend to use a wide lens to fit all in frame. Most of theses places are bleak and not many people seem to be in frame.

Editing

Most commonly in Drum and Bass music video you usually get a lot of slow motion. I believe that this gets used to signify the difference between the fast paced drum and bass compared to the slower parts to the song.
A constant trend throughout theses theme of music videos is that all shots get cut to the beat of the music, creating a constant uniformed effect.
